Power of attorney and overseas documents for Kuwait

Practical preparation for your next legal conversation.

If someone needs to act for you in Kuwait, first clarify the task and the authority required. The right document depends on what it will be used for and where it is issued.

Before preparing a power of attorney

Tell the office what you want the representative to do, who will act, whether you are in Kuwait and which institution or proceedings are involved. Ask whether a specific form or wording is needed and how broad the authority should be.

  • Identify the transaction or matter the authority is intended to cover.
  • Check the names and identity details of the parties.
  • Ask about any limits, conditions or period of authority appropriate to the task.
  • Confirm signing, certification and translation requirements before arranging appointments.

Documents issued outside Kuwait

Retain the original document and any certifications already attached to it. Tell the office the issuing country, document language and intended recipient in Kuwait. A document’s legalisation, translation and acceptance are separate questions that should be checked for the particular procedure.

The Ministry of Justice’s translation-ratification service describes requirements for accredited translations and certification of documents issued abroad. Check the current requirements with the relevant authority before paying for a translation or relying on a document for a transaction.

Questions that can save a repeated appointment

  • Does the recipient require the original, a certified copy or both?
  • Which language and translation provider are acceptable?
  • Which certification steps apply in the issuing country and Kuwait?
  • Does the document give the representative the authority actually needed?
  • Are any names, dates or identity details inconsistent across the records?

When a document relates to another legal matter

For company instructions, read about corporate and commercial matters. For family records, see family and divorce consultations. Relatives managing documents after a death can start with the inheritance page.

This is a preparation guide, not confirmation that a particular document will be accepted. Contact the office with the document type, country and intended use to discuss the appropriate next step.
